week 5 Misc pictures

Week 5. I think its week 5... They all seem like one big week now! I am 1 now!‏

Dear Friends and  Family!

It is always so great to hear from you. I love you and am so glad to hear that things are going well. That is so exciting to hear about dads new calling :)

So many things have happened this last week...here are some of the highlights and stories..

I went to Raising Canes for the first time! They have the best chicken strips and lemonade. ( I included a picture! lol be jelous..jk)

we were able to teach a lady I will call k. k wont let her son get baptized until she has learned more about the church and has taken the missionary discussions. We were able to teach her last Monday about the restoration. We watched the Restoration DVD. The spirit was so strong throughout the movie and afterward as we were testifying to her about the truth of this message and how it can bless her life. We invited her to pray with us during the lesson if Joseph Smith was really a prophet of god. She said ok! Sister Hills and I were so shocked because normally she says no to praying in front of us. Her prayer was the most sincere prayer I have ever heard. She asked God to tell her if this is his will and if it was she wanted to do what ever he wanted her to do. The spirit was so strong. We invited her to get baptized and she said she would not commit to a date, but she would when she knew it was right. She has a great heart and You can see the change working in her.

Another one of our investigators Is going to get baptized on July 16th! He is still reading and praying to know it is true. He has accepted everything we have taught him so far and we are working on member fellowship with him.

Apparently they are having a drought in Louisiana right now? To be honest..It doesn't feel like it. It is so humid here that I'm pretty sure they are not hurting for rain. Someone here has been praying for rain though because it has been raining a lot the past couple of days.

It is amazing to me how much important planning is. I have always kept a day planner and made sure to plan out my days, but on the mission we plan so much more. It is such an important part of our work. One night all of our appointments had fallen through and we weren't sure what we were going to do, but because we had planned and had a backup plan the lord was able to help us and we ended up having a very productive evening and visiting a lot of less active members.

Story!
Sister Hills and I were out tracting on Friday and stopped at this one house.. We knock on the door and wait a while, suddenly the door cracks open and the eyes of the very tired, frustrated man peek out from the crack of the door. he asks who we are..and we tell him were missionaries..he looks at us really weird and so i told him we had a message to share with him! To that he replied.."ok let me go put my M4 away.." he had had his gun pointed at us through the door. ( don't freak out dad. I am fine and safe and all is well.) lol  We ended up teaching him about the restoration on his door step because his wife was not home. our one sided conversation( from his end) was more about guns and politics..so we just stood there.. and tried to find a way to tie it into the gospel. he told his he had a  M17 with a 7 in. bayonet..and the M4 was his wife's..very interesting. after the 20 min. "lesson" on his door step we were able to leave. (people here like to talk a lot!) plus he was half asleep. As we were walking away Sister Hills turned to me and said " We are sure going to have to pray about ever going back to that house."  good times.

Sunday we were able to teach a man named Carl. Carl lives in the swamp in a trailer. He told us last week that we would be able to come back and teach him this week with a set return time. So we can back and he had forgotten about us. (It always amazes me how people do not take us serious when we say we are going to come back.lol) We sat outside on his porch, by his trailer, in the swamp and taught him the message of the restoration. The spirit was very strong as we were able to recount the first vision to him. There were a lot of things that we shared with him that he had never thought about before. He had a lot of questions about where we came from, and why we are here.. we are going to share with him the plan of salvation the next time we meet with him.

Yesterday Sister Hills and I and the elders ( who are Spanish speaking) were able to go to a Spanish sister in the wards house for lunch. She is so sweet and has such a wonderful testimony. Even though I could not understand any of it.. the spirit was very strong.
When we got to the house she had a salsa  thing with shrimp in it for us and ritz crackers. Sister Hills and I were so excited that that was all there was because we have been so very full lately because of all the dinner appointments. ( do not get us wrong, we love it, It is just hard because I might need another Southern hospitality skirt.lol) After we had finished with what we thought was the main course she brings us a huge bowl with a crab in it! She had made us seafood Gumbo. ( I included pictures) It was so good but so much! My first time having real crab! It was funny when she brought it to us Sis. Hills looked at us and said " That wasn't the main dish?" The members here are very good to us. The Seafood Gumbo had shrimp, chicken and crab in it. very good.
For dessert she gave us these strawberries in this sweet dip stuff.. I found out it was sweet and condensed milk and sour cream.

That is my report for the week. I hope to have more uplifting stories to share in the upcoming week. There are great things happening here in Slidell, LA. I know that the lord loves all his children, It is up to  you to help the missionaries find those who need rescuing.
Mom.. if anything sounds funny or needs fixing..please fix it. I hope my stories make sense..and don't worry the gun man wasn't going to shoot us..please don't freak out.lol. I hope these pictures that I chose are good. I included one of my bike. I will send you more of my apt. next week :)
I love you so much and am so glad you are doing well!
Love,
Sister Urie

week 4 Pictures!

Week 4 - Diane and the Monkeys

Family and Friends!

This past week has been a whirlwind crazy adventure. Once I got to Mississippi we stayed the night at the mission home. The next day was transfers..we drove to the gulf port stake center, there I met my trainer, Sister Hills and we drove back to Slidell, LA!
The people here are wonderful. We have a great ward. Sunday was a little different then I was used to because the ward is so much smaller. What they lack in size they make up for in spirit. They are a humble ward that you can tell everyone has a strong testimony of the Lord.
There is so much to say about Slidell!
Wednesday was my first day out in the field. We had a busy day  with appointments. I got to meet one of our progressing investigators. He is still praying to know if the book of Mormon is true. We get to meet with him again tonight! We also got to go tracting. When we go tracting we look for coins on the sidewalk. We made $0.17. lol
Everyone here talks about Katrina as if it happened yesterday. There is not one person we meet that doesn't end up telling us their story about Katrina and How it has affected their life. After the storm came through they had to check all of the homes. So on the garage doors their is a number (telling the date) with a big 'X' and another number under the 'X' (indicating how many bodies they found in the home) I have yet to see one that has a number at the bottom thank goodness.
On Saturday we were out Tracting for a few hours of the day. Little did we know there was a heat warning! ...yeah..I know... But it really wasn't that bad. (only 102 deg. with humidity)There are a lot of people that will give us water. We had a lot of success finding people that day. We found 5 houses in a row of people that said we could come back, they had talked with the missionaries before and had a copy of the book of Mormon. That hardly ever happens!
We were trying to find a referral we had received and couldn't find her..so I suggested we try one more house. So we knock on the door and a lady opens the door. She explains" Is that a bible?... something just told me that you'd be coming with a bible!" She proceeded to tell us that she was in the process of recording a song for her son for fathers day titled " you are my angel" She invited us inside to listen to it. Her humble home did not have air conditioning. we listened to her sing her song and read us some of the things she had written about God. Then her countenance changed and she told us about the evil dark man that is boarding at her home and how she thinks hes trying to kill her. She asked us to pray for her..Then asked us if we could pray for her right them. I offered the prayer..In the middle of my prayer i paused for a second..and she started talking/ praying. I got prayer talked for my first time. It was really funny..but at the time I didn't not know what to do. After that we asked if we could share a message with her. We taught her about the restoration and how the book of Mormon is another witness of Jesus Christ. we invited her to read and pray about it. She said she would when she could find her glasses.
After that she said she needed to give us a gift..Something for our trouble and for being so kind. She pulled out of the couch behind her these baby monkey statue doll things that she said she was going to give to her son. She wanted us to have them. Mine was a baby girl monkey with a shirt that said "little Sucker" and Sister Hills was a baby boy monkey that said "Go Bananas!"  Lets just say it was an experience i will not soon forget.
It was great to be able to go to church on Sunday. The ward is so wonderful. We had appointments set up to teach people and all fell through. It was hard to find anyone to talk to tracting because it was fathers day. The people we did talk to were very nice.. I haven't had a door slammed on me yet. Those of different religions here are very kind and have great respect for what we are doing. They are just very strong in their church.
There way of talking in the south is very different and there are little phrases We like to call "southernisms". I want to send one home every week..I will also let you know how much money we made tracting! lol
This weeks southernism is : Instead of saying "I'm getting ready to go "..they say.. "im a fixin to go.."
Tracting Tips made: $0.26  ( this is going towards our smoothie fund!)
I know that the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored once again on the earth and I feel so blessed and honored to be able to share it with the people of the Slidell Area!
God Bless Y'all! :)

I made it!

I made it!

We had a great flight from TX to Mississippi. Small small little plane. It was an adventure for sure. We got here and the mission president and his wife greeted us. They are so wonderful. We had lunch at the Brandon meeting house when we got here. interviews and orientation followed. Then we were able to go tracting for 30 min. after that we met at the mission home and got dinner ready ( sweet pork , cafe Rio style food) After dinner we took pictures then had a wonderful fireside testimony meeting. I am so excited to serve and work!

I am being transferred today..where do you ask? To me most Humid place in the whole mission. Yes, Slidell, LA. I am so very excited and you will be happy to know that I might just be giving up my addiction to cardigans. The humidity is not bad now.. but I know i will soon learn what real humidity is. My new companions name is Sister Hill.
(My area i will be serving in was one of the most devastated areas after hurricane Katrina. I am going to see a lot of poverty, yet i here they have the most members down there. 150 active members, there are 600 members though. A lot of reactivating. The bishops store house and the employment center is in Slidell. )

Sister Spencer and I are going to leave in a few minutes to drive to Gulf Port, MS where Sister Hill is waiting with the van (yes my area we will have a van!) We use cars so much down here I am really contemplating buying a GPS...either that or you can send me one? lol. Let me know what you think.

My bike is coming on the transfer van this afternoon and should arrive at around 4. I am leaving with the sister early this afternoon so we can get there before too late. The members drive the bikes down and I should get it tomorrow.

Have a wonderful day
Love,

Sister Urie

Week 3-Put me in coach im ready to play!

Week 3!

I am so ready to get out there and serve and love and bring the people of mississippi unto christ! We had infield training yesterday. This is a meeting where they teach us about what is going to happen when we get out to the field. an 'orientation' if you will. It was so great to learn more about the work i will be doing. I leanred how important it is to have the spirit when youre teaching. I learned that without memebers the work is so much harder. You need that strong memeber support system. every memeber needs 1. a friend 2. a calling 3. to be able to feel the spirit. I also learned that baptism is central to our purpose as missionaries. I never wanted to push baptism on anyone before..but now being a missionary and studying the gospel more I see that it is so very important! I cannot stress the importance of being baptized into the church of jesus christ by someone holding the priesthood authority of god. There is no other way we can be saved or have exhaltation.
I cannot wait to share these things with the people of mississippi. I love this work and i know that it is the truth! I would not be doing this with my time if it wasnt true.
Sister harding and I are almost all packed for our 3am departure to the field on monday morning. :)

We had a great experience teaching Carlo Bomba today. We told him that we werent going to be able to teach him anymore because were are being "transfered". So we read with him a scripture and he told us to share with him the most important thing we could on 10 minutes. We told him how importance baptism was and that he needed to be baptized. he told us how that was nice and if it were true he would. we testified to him that it was true and he needed it more then anything in his life. that this message would bless not only his life but the life of his children. and he would be able ot be together wtih his wife again. The spirit was very strong.
Love,

Sister Urie!

Letter 2 from Sister Urie

Dear family and Friends!

less than a week is left until I am out in the field. I cannot believe how fast time has flown!

I wanted to share with you my testimony of why i am here. I wanted to serve a mission because I have been offered so many opportunities and blessings that I wanted to give back something to the lord. I also wanted to share with other families what our family has been so blessed to have. I want them to have eternal families just like ours. Sunday I learned though that no matter how hard I try to give back that the lord is blessing me in so many ways through this mission then i could ever give back (if that makes sense) He loves me so much and I have learned that this last couple of weeks. All he has asked of me in return is that I give my heart and soul to this work, which is true, and love the people. The lord and the spirit will make up for what i lack. I know that this is the true church of Jesus Christ restored on the earth and I feel so honored and blessed to be able to share this wonderful message with everyone. :)
We had the opportunity to watch the Joseph Smith Movie on Sunday. This movie touches my heart. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet called of God. He has done so much for this work and my heart is full of gratitude for his great sacrifice.

In class we are learning a lot about the spirit and how we have to teach by the spirit. Without the spirit you cannot teach, it is impossible and pointless. Mission prep has helped me so much. I am grateful for that opportunity i had. I am also grateful for the opportunity I had to attend the temple as much as I did. This preparation has made all the difference. I am still working on learning so much more. There is so much more i need to learn. Currently I am studying Joseph smith history and 3 Nephi. Also lesson 2 in PMG (preach my gospel)

I need to thank everyone that has sent me letters and packages. Your support means the world to me! I am working on replying to all the letters i have received and sending those out today. They keep us so busy here, but I love it! Thank you again :)

Two funny moments that happened last week were..

We were at breakfast (we like to sit by the window). By the window is the line people can get in to get a sack lunch if they don't want to dress up for breakfast or it is their p-day we looked out the window to see these two elders get their sack lunch, look around to see if anyone was there and they busted out break dancing right there as if no one could see them. Little did they know we could see them through the window :) no dancing rule here is no bueno. lol

My second funny story is that my district elders are crazy and made up a rap..i will send the video home.. oh the things that happen during personal time..haha

on a more spiritual note. Sunday we had a fireside. As an opening hymn for the fireside we sang a special version of called to serve it was so inspiring. We started off very quiet and the dynamic of or singing increased as the we progressed in the song.  It was as if we were the army of helaman and out of sight, marching over the hill until we came into full view. then standing and singing "onward ever onward as we glory in his name, forward pressing forward, with the triumph song we sing. God our strength will be, press forward ever called to serve our king." It was an amazing sight and brought tears to my eyes. also there was a man in front of us that could not stand. Yet he made it a point to stand during the end of his song. he said it was his duty.
I love this work. I love it here. I head into the field Monday. I pray I will be ready to serve my king and the people of Mississippi.

All my love,
Sincerely,

Sister Urie!
