Week 26 - 852.7 miles, More cupcakes, Spaghetti dinner, and Happy national hug a Mormon day!‏

Dear Family!

There is so much to tell you this week and so many pictures!

Soo..heres the story..
Sister V is still pretty sick ( Thank you for keeping her in your prayers) We drove to Jackson and Hattiesburg, MS 3 times this week..for a grand total of 852.7 miles in three days! Yes you heard me. Crazy huh? We got to go on an exchange with Clinton as a result and I got to serve  ( for a few hours) with Sister Harding again! ( my MTC companion.)
On Wednesday we had a leadership training meeting in Jackson. At this meeting we learned more about the Gospel of Jesus Christ ( which is the core of everything) and we also focused a great deal on 'how to begin teaching'. It was a wonderful meeting! They showed us the Preach my gospel train and how if we are not helping our investigators understand the importance of different things such as church attendance, reading the book of mormon, prayer..ect. (these things are the different cars on the train) If these are not done then they cars detach from the train then the train will only have the engine left. ( The engine being the gospel of Jesus Christ) and it will drive off without us. No es bueno!
Also learned that the future of missionary work is I- pads. All I have to say to that is.."Don't care how I want it now! " :) lol
So that night we all went to this really gross Mexican restaurant..yes'm that is what the picture is of. Oh I do miss real salsa!
So Thursday we had to drive back to hattiesburg and the Picayune sisters came with us because they had a doctors appointment too..like i mentioned earlier..all of us are sick..( except me).. While we were in Hattiesburg waiting for them to come out of the doctor my legs were hurting from sitting so much so I decided to run around the car a couple of times.. ( yes i know, I am crazy and looked ridiculous, but I did it anyway)  So I ran around the car a couple of times then i stopped to stretch.. while i was stretching I look and there is this car that pulls rather quickly into the parking lot and then these three girls jump out of the car and run over to me and say "are you a sister missionary?" I am sure I looked rather confused because to this i said "yes?" rather questionably and they replied " Don't worry were members of the church!! It is national hug a Mormon day and we saw you and wanted to come give ya'll a hug." We took some pictures together. It was so funny. I was so worried when they first ran up to us. Needless to say I am glad I was prompted to run around the car.
Oh! Another cool story... Sister V. and I our first time going up to Jackson we had this desire to take pictures by the welcome to Mississippi sign..so we did! Once we were done and got further down the road we saw this huge chemical truck accident. Had we not stopped to take pictures we would have been right by him when the accident happened. Gotta love the power of prayer to keep us safe!

Our ward had a spaghetti dinner/ auction on Friday night. I love the ward we are in right now so much, they really try so hard to help the youth in all aspects of the work. They raised a lot of money that night and it was a well attended event with a lot of non members and investigators. Alsooo please tell Uncle Steve that I really missed his Auctioneer voice!

Well that is pretty much it on the week. Hopefully we will have more stories to report for this coming week! I love ya'll and hope all is going well. Please let me know what I can do to help with anything. I promise I am trying really hard to make time count and make every day the greatest day ever!

Love you!

Sister Urie

Tracting tips..: Nothing! It has been soo humid lately and very foggy/misty..weird! lol

Southernism: we were at the doctors and the lady said.." I need to 'axe' you a few questions" ( axe=ask) lol
alsoo! heard this the other day.. did you know a hee-haw is a hoe-down? pretty cool
Scripture: So i realised the other day.. it just hit me while i was studying.. we need to have faith not only in Jesus Christ, but faith in The Atonement that Jesus Christ performed for us! Faith that it did happen, Faith that because of this atonement we are redeemed from the fall and that we can be cleansed from all our sins! An amazing gift. Free for the taking. :) The Bible Dictionary says that " The atonement is conditional, however, so far as each person's individual sins are concerned, and touches every one to the degree that he has faith in Jesus Christ, repents of his sins, and obeys the gospel." I just love the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Week 25 - Gator and Cajun Donuts

Dear Family!

Helloooo family! i love and miss ya'll so much and hope you are all having a great week.

Things are going pretty well here. This week we were able to do a lot of work and see a lot of people. Sometimes it feels like we are only scratching the surface when we are trying so hard, yet I know that the Lords hand is in everything and we are planting a lot of seeds.
Let me see...Stories from this week..

We got a call from a lady in the ward..she shared with us how she had shared the gospel with her friend and he friend wanted to get baptized! ( oh yes..i know what you are thinking. So very exciting. right?) Well you are right, this is very exciting! We went and taught her the first two lessons in one visit and set her with a baptism date. The down side is she is really only in it for the welfare. No Bueno. So we are praying really hard that it all works out. We do not want to baptize someone into inactivity. Yet, we are very grateful that heavenly father has blessed us with someone to teach. One of the blessings from the fifth Sunday lesson we taught!

My Spanish is coming a long pretty well. I don't know if i told you? Sister V and I are working on learning Spanish from the Spanish members. Yeah yeah i know..good luck! well we have a bunch of Spanish supplies and Spanish copies of preach my gospel. I can now pray in Spanish, mind you they are very simple prayers, but i can still pray!

We are also teaching that same family i think I told you about last week, the one that is agnostic? We saw them last week and it went alright. He just is not letting the spirit touch his heart at all. It is all very logical and it does not always work that way. The spirit speaks to your mind and your heart ( Moroni 10:3-5) (D&C 8:2-3)  We are going to teach them again this week. Our plan is to share the movie ' together forever with them' and share with them our testimonies about why we are out on a mission. I will return and report!

That is pretty much it on the week... almost!

Oh So i know what i want for Christmas..because you keep asking I will tell you..For Christmas I would love for all the family to read the whole Book of Mormon. This is what i really want for Christmas.

Drum roll please... here is the greatest southernism yet!... I ate Gator! yesir! I ate alligator on Wednesday! Not just alligator, we had Cajun donuts and these cajun egg roll things that have gator in them.  So very good! We went to this place called 'Gator me crazy' in Picayune, MS after district meeting on Wednesday. It was very good! It almost tastes like chicken..but better! That is what the pictures are of! Enjoy.

No tracting tips this week. I did find one penny!

also..scripture:
James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and up braideth not; and it shall be given him.
But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

Week 24 Pictures

Get well flowers from the Senior Missionaries

Week 24:Clean Apartment, "I'm almost a grown up!" and the Media Referral.‏

Dear Friends and Family,

Things have been a little crazy but great! Another great week in Slidell, LA. So here is the update...

My companion has been really sick with stomach problems. So if you could please keep Sister VanRoosendaal in your prayers I would appreciate it. I know there is so much power in prayer and that the Lord answers all prayers. No prayer ever goes unanswered. It is up to us to have faith sufficient that our prayers will be answered. I have always thought that the Lords timing was a funny thing, when in reality it is our timing that is funny.  As a result of her being sick I have had a lot of time to be in the apartment to study, ponder and clean! Let me just tell you..our area book, fridge and closet look great. Also I am really far into my Book of Mormon reading! This week I learned that patience is not just getting through but it really means (by definition) "Calmly striving."
There are so many other things i have learned from my studies, but i will spare you the details :)

Here is an overview of our week...  Monday we had to be in early because of Halloween. Preparation day ends at 6 and we had to be in at 7pm. We decided to go contact our media referral with the hour time we had. So we drove out to see them. ( Husband and wife that went to the Mormon Battalion in San Diego and wanted to learn more about the church!) They had so many questions. There main concern is why bad things happen to good people. The husbands first wife died three years ago due to cancer. His wife was a great woman, went to church every week and got sick. He does not know why something so tragic could happen to someone so good. The same story with his current wife. Her husband was a great man and passed away. They remarried each other and are very happy now, yet just do not understand. We shared with them the restoration of the gospel and are going back tonight ( 11/7/11) to teach them the plan of salvation and also to share with them about why bad things happen to good people.(
http://lds.org/general-conference/2011/10/the-songs-they-could-not-sing?lang=eng) the Book of Mormon answers the questions of the soul. I cannot wait to update you on them!
So we had a pretty great Halloween. Stayed inside and ate Cheddar and broccoli soup in our bread bowls. Yummy thank you thank you!!

The rest of the week is semi a blur..but!  Here is a funny story..

So we went to teach a lesson to a boy that just turned 8 and is thinking about getting baptized. We asked his little brother, who is four years old, How old he was..he put up four fingers and said " I am almost a grown up!" Then Sister Foster (we were on exchanges) asked him what he wanted to be when he grows up..she told him her son was a firefighter. He said he did not want to be that..then she asked him.." What about a Police Man?" To that he replied.."OH! I Love that Costume!!". It was very cute.

Another story..We talked to this lady at Winn Dixie( a worker)..she was in her twenties. We had to go to get some things and I was determined to turn it into a finding activity. So as we were walking out i asked her if she had a church to go to ..she said she did and I tried to give her a
mormon.org card, but she didn't really want it. somehow i got her to take it, and it was one of those situations where we just wanted to get out of there..she said that she saw us in there all the time.. so we went to leave and i ran into the metal thing that holds all the coupons/store magazine things.. and went to go out the door..but it was the exit! so we could not get out.. so we had to walk by the lady we handed the card to again. Lets just say it was super embarrassing!! Sister VanRoosendaal said what you tell me all the time Mom.."I just cant take you anywhere.." And it is true. You cannot. :) "And thus we see".. even missionaries have embarrassing moments and have a hard time sharing the gospel with people! So talk to all your friends dear family. lol

Been calling a lot of people and trying to help my poor sick friend. I feel so bad for her. Please pray for her. One thing that they told us when we were going to train is that they will be one of your greatest converts. Also all those who are your companions in the field are going to be your greatest converts..This had made me reflect a great deal on how if that is the case on the mission, in life, how much more so your eternal companion (husband or wife) is your greatest convert! If this is the case how should we treat our spouses? Just think about it..

Southernism: "Grilled Chicken and sausage with beef gumbo" ( Picture included) I found this at Winn Dixie..only in the south. :)

Oh and P>S>.. i guess there was a huge game going on Monday night.. lets just say no use in tracting because everyone turned us away.
Tracting Tips: Zero
Scripture: Alma 53:19-22 I love that it says the people of Ammon had never been a "disadvantage..(but) they became..a great support."  Also! I love the Christlike attributes that are mentioned describing those stripling warriors.

Well that's the story! I will keep you updated. .Hope you have a great week. Love you and hope all is well!

Love, Sister Urie
