Week 22 Pictures

 At the Bridal Shower

 Looks good

week 22 - New companion, bridal shower, and pumpkins

Dear Friends and Family!

Hellooo! I love you and hope you are having a great week. Things are going great here. The weather has been really nice actually. It has been in the 60-70s all week. Let me tell you, it has been very strange to use the heater in the car and in the apartment this week.
Yes it is true! i got a new companion! Her name is Sister VanRoosendaal. She is from Boise, Idaho. I love her so much! She is such a fun sweet girl and we are having a lot of fun serving together..well I am..i hope she is too! and can you believe it I am training too! I am trying to look at it as just another opportunity to show more love, like you would in an calling. I love that! Callings and such are not an opportunity to get ahead or have a high position but it is an opportunity to show more love and charity for someone. I hope this makes sense..but I am love it and I love her!

So this week things have been kind of slow. We had transfers, which were awesome! We drove all the way to Clinton, MS for transfers. The rest of the week went really well..just sort of slow like i said. Both Sister VanRoosendaal  and I were really tired because of transfers so we were trying recover. and that awful cold bug is going around. but anyways for stories!...

This week we contacted a referral from a lady in the ward. The referral actually lives a few houses down from us. She is from Brazil and speaks Portuguese and also speaks pretty fluent English. We were really impressed with how much the member had shared with her and given her to read and watch before we went over. Also the member always invites her to the activities even though this woman is very active in her church. We shared with her the Book of Mormon and how it can bless her life and the life of her family. We are going to be meeting with her tonight and I am excited to see how it goes. This would be another family! A Mom, Dad, little girl and another little one on the way.

Next thing that happened... There is a lady in our ward that is getting married and we went to her Bridal Shower! She is such a great friend and we really love her. We are really excited for her that she is getting married. I have included pictures from the shower. Sister VanRoosendaal got to be the one to be dressed up in a toilet paper wedding dress..taadaa! yes we are sister missionaries :)

Another story... So we are working with another family who are members who gave us a referral of one of their friends. The women they referred us to is in her late 50s. The mom of the family and this woman are business partners and the woman is moving in with them. When we were there she happened to have her  grand kids over for the weekend. These kids were so sweet and just wanted to be our friends. We carved pumpkins together and ate dinner. We shared with them a lesson on the restoration of the gospel and For the first time since i have been going over there everyone in the house gathered round to listen to the thought. It was really a great night. We loaned a copy of the Book of Mormon to the little girl ( age 10) She loved it and went and sat in the corner and started reading while we were there. It was so cute. We are going to go back over on Friday to their Halloween party.

The family we were working with ( The one i told you about that is amazing? The one that went to salt lake and toured the visitors center and then called us and wanted us to learn more?) Well.. We went and saw the mom and her day care that she runs this week. I just love her. They were all sick this week and missed church and mutual. There is this awful bug going around. Why do we have to get sick? Hopefully they will be doing better this week so we can take members over to meet with them again and address there concerns. They are a great family.

Well..That is pretty much it on the week.  I will send more stories next week. I just keep praying that we will be led by the spirit to those who are prepared to receive the restored gospel. " Pray as if all depends on the lord, and work as if all depends on us."

I love you and hope you're having a great week,

Love, Sister Urie

Tracting Tips: Nada..nothin
Scripture: Alma 30: 17-18, 19-21 and 21-22 This is the story of when an anti-christ by the name of Korihor comes 'into' the people and trys to lead away there hearts against God. I love these verses because it shows the contrast between these 3 groups of people and when faced with sin, how they delt with it. In verses 17-18 they allowed their hearts of many to be led away. in verses 19-21 they did not think twice about it and " took him, bound him and carried him before Ammon" In other words they did not have to try to figure out what it was, they saw sin for what it was and got rid of it as quick as they could. The third group in verses 21-22 it says that " here (korihor) did not have much success" in other words he was still able to turn away the hearts of a few! Once they recognized who he was and the evil he was doing then they did the same things as the people in verses 19-21 ( the people of Ammon) they " Took him, bound him and carried him (away)"
I just love these three examples and after reading them I reevaluated in what degree i allow sin into my heart. Which people am i most like? I just love the things we can learn from the people in the Scriptures. ( hope this makes sense!)

Week 21 - How's yo Mama

Dear Family and Friends

How are you doing? I hope you are doing well. I love seeing and hearing about all your adventures. Thank you for sharing. There is so so much that has happened this week here. I will start off by telling you that yes, I am going to be training a new missionary these next two transfers! Crazy yes..i know. I have a feeling that training is a lot like parenting? Correct me if I am wrong..I have had a lot of anxiety about worry that I am going to ruin her and that she will die. ( I know this is not the case.. I just don't want to mess her up or be a bad trainer.) A lot of my fears and worries were put to ease after going to the training for trainers meeting on Thursday. I am really excited to train and hope I can help my new missionary sister friend to enjoy, love and stay excited about the work!
Ok..here are the stories..So Tuesday we had to go get the Oil changed in our mini van. Oh what an adventure that was. What they said would only take 45 minutes to an hour took 3 and a half hour! Now don't get me wrong, it was a great experience and we did meet people and talk to people. It was just forever long. What was funny though was we met this man and his wife ( who has dementia) They were really nice to us and knew we were church people..and then when we told them we were " Mormon" The little old man freaked out and started telling us how he is Catholic and telling us everything about his religion. Which is fine. Truth is truth and I love to learn about how people came to have Christ in their lives. What was weird though is he couldn't look us in the eye when he was telling us about his church yet when he was telling us about football he could look us straight in the eye. Weird.
While we were there the man and his wife were not happy because they had been there for longer then we had an our car was done before theirs. What was wrong with their car had something to do with a software thing in their car and as a result there was a little light on their dash board that went off..not a big deal from what the car people were telling them..So the man proceed to explain the problem to his wife.. he said " The computers aren't talking well with each other..The Kia in Korea says to the Kia in lake shore Slidell..'How are you doing?' and the Kia computer here in Slidell says to the kia in Korea ' Hey, Hows yo mama!'. Too funny. :)
Next..we have been meeting with that family that we met a lot. each time we go over we take with us a member and it has been going really well. We cannot answer their questions fast enough. They came to book of mormon class on Wednesday night and The daughter (16 yrs old) went to Young women's. The daughter and mom came to church on Sunday and told us that The mom and dad did not want to join that they were good staying catholic because that's what they've been all their lives but they're happy for Kristy to learn more if this is what she wants. We were a little sad..but we think they are just scared..it has only been a week and they are probably just overwhelmed. The culture of our church really is overwhelming!!..

So another story! On Saturday night I played the violin at chick-fil-a. It was actually a pretty good proselyting activity. I had a really fun time "strolling" again and putting to use all the songs that I learned in strolling strings in High School. and thus we see... You really do use some of the thing you learn in  High School. Also I had quite a few people ask me questions about why my name tag said sister on it. I also had someone ask me if Mormons could only wear skirts. While playing 'There is sunshine in my soul today' I looked over and saw a man singing the words of the song to his daughter. I was very curious how he knew the song and he said that he was over the music for his congregation at the church he went to. It was fun to try to have him name off some of the hymns that are in his hymn book and play them from memory. ( Rock of ages of course) His little daughter requested 'This little light of mine', 'Row, Row, Row your boat', 'If your happy and you know it clap your hands' and the wheels on the bus. It was really cute and fun.

On Sunday Sister LeBaron and I played a musical number. "Joseph Smith's first prayer". I Love Sister LeBaron. It has been so much fun to serve with her and I will miss her so much! Look out world Sister Jessica LeBaron will be on the market on Wednesday. haha

I will keep you posted on who my new companion is...can you believe they're letting me train?!

I love you so much and hope you have a wonderful week!

Love, Sister Urie

Week 20 - Families, Families, Families

Dear Family!

Greetings from the land of Slidell, LA! I am doing wonderful. I learned this week that contrary to popular belief missionaries are not robots and can get sick too.lol I promise this is not a heroic letter of how I was on the verge of death and miraculously recovered.. no nothing like that. It is just amazing to me how real the work is and  the lord really does call individuals to the work.
Things are going wonderful here. As I have said in previous letters, the work has been really slow and at times frustrating because we did not have that many people to teach, or anyone that wanted to listen to us. After countless hours of hard work, prayer and much fasting we have families to teach. We have families coming out our ears! It is amazing. So so many families. As a missionary this is what you pray and hope for and it is coming to pass. The Lords timing really is an amazing thing and when people are ready to receive the gospel they are ready..and when they are not..no missionary effort is wasted..but you have to face it..they're just not ready. No amount of trying to listen to the spirit to discern what they need will help them if there heart is not in the right place and there eyes are set upon things of the world.
Yes yes I know you are probably dieing to hear who these wonderful families are that we are teaching and I will tell you!
First we are still working with the Part member family. The one I always tell you about. Last Tuesday we took a couple from the ward over with us to meet and fellowship them. It went wonderful. The head of the home, who is the member, told us before that he had home teachers many years ago that fell asleep on his couch. He fed them, listened to them and then sent them on there way. Going back last night we asked him what he thought of the couple we brought over. He said they were nice and they were really out going. We said yes they are! and They didn't fall asleep. he thought that was funny. We are trying so hard to help them see that they can be a family forever, that the love they have for each other does not have to exist only in this life but the one to come as well. Little by little we are able to see how there hearts are being softened and they are, and desiring to make changes in there lives.
I really feel that one of the main reasons people are so scared to change is because sometimes repentance hurts! Seeing the things that aren't in line with Gods will and then changing is hard and it hurts..but i wonder..why are we so scared to repent and go through that kind of hurt, yet we are not scared of the hurt that comes when we ride a skate board? Repentance is a lot like the scrape that comes when we fall off the skate board.  The wound, be it shallow or deep, hurts for a time. This is like the Godly sorrow we feel when we realize what we are doing is wrong.  We know that we must put things on the wound to help it heal, sometimes it hurts worse as we do, but it is important that we try to make things right. After all the healing is done we are left with a scar..now the scar does not hurt because the healing has fully taken place..yet it is there for us always to remember so we will not want to do the thing that caused the hurt in the first place. God promises that he will remember these things no more and our hearts are full of such joy and we are able to sing the song of redeeming love. Now why are we so scared of this wonderful process of Repentance? What a gift and a blessing it is.
I tell you these things because I feel this is what the head of the house must be going through..It is going to hurt coming back to church because of decisions made, but if he could just see how happy he would be in the long run..oh the joy he would feel.

and now for the second and last story! drum roll please!!!....
We have a family of 3! yes count them...a dad a mom and their daughter! We received a text about a week ago for a whats called a "media Referral" This is when someone goes to salt lake and they meet with missionaries and want to learn more. They give them there information and then they give it to us and we go talk with them.
So this family..can i just tell you..they are wonderful! They went to salt lake and saw the temple and toured all of temple square for hours with missionaries. This daughter of this family is 16 yrs old and is already starting to look into what college she wants to go to. So naturally they went and toured BYU campus and loved it. The girl is currently home schooled because she does not like the values of her friends and others that go to her school. She told us how impressed she was with the honor code and how she loved the values they had and how everyone was so happy. The mom also told us that they felt so good while they were there, almost as if they were back in the 50s because everyone was so friendly and happy. ( ha..yes this is true) So I am getting ahead of myself..
After we got the text we only had the number for a business and an address..so we called the number and left a message. We waited a few days and They called us back! We set up an appointment to go and see them yesterday. Our visit with them was amazing. We felt like Ammon and his experience teaching king lamoni in the book of mormon. Expounding scriptures unto them and the plan of salvation. It was a wonderful experience. They were very open and had many many questions. I love it when people really want to know more. What we have to offer is to build upon the truth they already know. Words cannot describe how wonderful this family is!
We are going back Tuesday and Thursday night.. and! They are coming on Wednesday to Young Women's and Book of Mormon class. Such a blessing!
(Oh i was going to tell you.. The Dad ( who is 80!) asked some really great questions.. He wanted to know how high up women go in the church. What happens if you don't come to church. How you become a member.. They had some really great questions. I hope we answered them in the way that will help them the most and by the spirit. We sure tried!)

So that is pretty much it..It might sound like a little, but the Lord truly has blessed us. No missionary effort is ever wasted!
Also another cool experience coming up is I am going to play the violin for the daddy daughter night at Chick-fil-a here.. I never thought in a million years I would be playing the violin so much on my mission.. So yes Mom..I should've practiced more. I know now :) I feel so blessed and things are going so well. I hope you are having a great week and may God be with you.
Love, Sister Urie

Week 19 - Pictures

Week 19 - General conference and Long Street

Dear Family!

Hello! I love you and It is always so great to hear from you. Things have been so crazy busy here, which is good! I love the work and the people and everything is going great. It is starting to get really cool here which is strange..but I am not complaining!

This week we had some really great missionary moments..
Monday we were able to go see the cupcake man and his family. While we were there we had a great conversation with the wife of the cupcake man about how she had some scary experiences in the shop ( It is located in an old house). We told her about how we can have someone come by and bless her shop after hours. she was very excited. We are going to go back this evening with a member and have them bless it. Also we had the opportunity to share with them the family: proclamation to the world and a copy of the Book of Mormon. The spirit was very strong as we testified to them of how this would bring their family so much more peace and how we thought they were a great family and we wanted there family to have every bit of happiness that our families have. It touched our hearts when the cupcake mans wife said that she felt close to us already and appreciated us. ( Hence the picture of me holding the cake pop..really happy!) We are so excited to be able to teach the cupcake man and his family! "..and thus we see.." Eating cupcakes is a great finding activity.
The next great experience has to do with a former investigator..remember that family I told you about a few weeks ago? The mom of the family was the sister of a recent convert?..well we heard she was moving and doing really poorly, plus her phone stopped working. So we decided that we were going to throw miles to the wind and find her if it was the last thing we did. ( Plus it helped that was the first day of the month) So off we went to find Long st.. We drove and tried to find it..nothing..we called a member to get directions online for us..nothing. we tried retyping it into the GPS hundreds of times..no such street exists..So after many prayers we found long st. and the apartment complex! ( mind you long st. was very short.) Her sister told us she was there the day before and she wouldn't even let her in. We thought we might as well try though. So we knocked..and knocked..and knocked. nothing. We left a sticky note and knocked again..nothing. We prayed..waited and knocked again..no answer. We knelt  in prayer..pleading that if it is the lords will we be able to see her and help her... After praying we knocked again.. and guess what!..no answer. As a final last resort sang all the verses of 'I am a child of God." ..then we waited...as a final attempt we knocked again at the door. No Answer.
Now I am sorry if this story was misleading when I told you that it was a great experience.. mind you it was! We might not have been able to contact her. (no missionary effort is wasted) Yet I learned a great lesson about how my Savior and My Heavenly Father feels about me. How many times have I been so stubborn and just will not answer the door. This experience helped me to feel how much our Savior loves us and will try and try and try again to let us know that he is there for us. All we need to do is open the door! The atonement is the gift and message that he has to bring to us and he feels so disheartened when we ignore his voice. I learned that I need to be repenting always, always looking for ways to change and improve and trying to align my will with the fathers will. This is the only way to true happiness and joy. Just please open the door!
( The picture of the lake is a view from the apartment complex)

So this weekend was General Conference! I love General Conference. I know that Thomas S. Monson a prophet. Just like Moses was a prophet. God loves us so much and will not leave us in the dark. So he has blessed us with a prophet on the earth today. I also know with all my heart that all the men that are called are men of God.

I absolutely loved all the words that were said at conference.. I will share with you some of the things I enjoyed the most.
first i love all the things said about prayer. I love President Manson remarks in the Sunday morning session as he said that We need to have a relationship with our father in heaven..and if not we need to do so now.The lord wants to bless us but so many blessings are waiting to be given upon our asking for them. (3 Nephi 18:20)Also how we need to follow the inspiration and guidance of the spirit and learn how the spirit speaks to us.
Another great talk was the one by Tad R. Callister. I loved the analogy he gave about the bible and the book of Mormon. The analogy was that you can draw an infinite amount of lines through a single dot. The dot represents the bible and those lines represent the different interpretations of the bible and then the different churches there are. Then he asked how many straight lines you can draw between two dots. Those dots are the bible and the book of Mormon. the answer is only one. The book of Mormon helps clarify up any confusion in the doctrine. After watching conference I have such a greater desire to read the book of Mormon and feast upon the words that are in it.
I hope you liked conference as much as I did and I cant wait to hear what you learned and thought about it.
Thank you so much for your prayers and support. Missionary work is hard,  yet it is so wonderful and I love it!

Keep on Keepin on!

Love, Sister Urie
