Week 23, Halloween, Street Fair and the 5th sunday lesson

Dear Family!

Greetings from Slidell, LA! Things are going great here. We have been a little under the weather (it is getting cold!) Other wise everything is great. I absolutely love my new companion, Sister VanRoosendaal. We have been having a lot of fun together, through sickness and all. and We are working hard to find a family to bring into the waters of baptism.  "White Christmas" here we come.
So..here are the stories about our adventures for this week...
We went out teaching with a member couple in the ward this week. After some of our appointments feel through and the night evolved, they took us to go see one of there neighbor friends. It was great! There neighbor is such a great man, he has some family problems and yet he goes to church every week and reads from the bible. He said he could really see the difference in his life from the days where he reads the bible and the days he does not. This led into a discussion of how he can build upon that faith with the book of Mormon and how the Bible and book of Mormon are both truth. I love to use the analogy from conference given about the dot and how you can put an infinite number of lines through this one dot. ( the dot representing the bible and the lines representing different interpretations of the bible and all the different churches.) when you add another dot ( representing the book of Mormon.) how many straight lines can you draw through these two dots? answer..only one. there is only one interpretation when the Bible and Book of Mormon are read together.
So back to Rick.. He is a really great man and said he would take Moroni's challenge and Read and Pray about the book of Mormon. We will be seeing him on Tuesday with the member family. What was also funny is he said that the orange basketball left in his front yard was his Halloween decorations. Great man.

Next story we drove to Waveland,MS Wednesday afternoon and drove back that evening with the senior (seasons) sisters. We had district meeting there and also had interviews with President Tucker. Also! The area doctor for us missionaries came. It was really funny because he had these little dots that we put on our had and if they changed to a nice green color you were not stressed..black meant stress.. yes mine was a blackish brown color. no bueno. It makes me wonder..Should I eat more M&Ms? (rhetorical question) Another thing he told us is that we need to make sure we have more color on our plates. More fruits and veggies. So please...if you are feeding the missionaries give them lots of fruits and vegetables..let them take it home. ( and thank you mom for not making me eat all my food. lol)  He told us more..but I wanted to share that with you. ha

(We got this super awesome box! Thank you Thank you! The Halloween goodies were so cute and yes we are going to have a party tonight because we have to go in early due to trick-or-treaters)

So here is some sad news..and then i will tell you more happy stories.. The girl from china we were teaching and the great family that had toured salt lake dropped us. Yep.. Very sad. We are not discouraged though because that weakens faith! Their time will come.

Ohhhk. So this is a good story.. We are teaching this man who is the neighbor of a member. He is great and we are working to help him understand and feel Gods love for him in his life. We met with him on Tuesday and Thursday. His work schedule is very crazy and he said he would 'try' to come to church...and he did not make it. We were very sad but we have faith that he will come to church next week. It is very interesting..he loves definitions and was disappointed that the pamphlets only go up to a certain letter of the alphabet. Also! every time we go over to teach him there is this crazy bee that flies around and distracts us... Thus we see a distraction does not have to be evil to be effective..

He also has great prayers, this came about after he finally read the Restoration pamphlet and taught himself how to pray. Pretty great. One thing i loved he said in his prayer is he said he hopes the Lord lets us stick around long enough to go fishing on his boat with him. Also that he can make it to his baptism date of December 3rd.

We had a great morning on Saturday because we went to the street fair! Olde Towne Slidell was holding a street fair and we went to talk to the people. We networked and made some great friends. Also! We saw a sign for Gator sausage or something like that. We did not try it..and decided to have jambalaya instead. This was Sister VanRoosendaals first bowl. I have included some pictures of our experience, also we found kettle corn. ( Any fair would not be complete without kettle corn!) This was 'Cajun Kettle Corn'. It was a really successful morning. We met this one lady that takes amazing photography and she said she would love to use us for some of her pictures. Hopefully this will lead to an opportunity to teach her the gospel.

This Sunday was the 5th Sunday, so for the 3rd hour the missionaries taught about what..? you guessed it..Missionary work! We tried to share with the ward that it is not hard to be a friend and share the gospel. Our goal is to baptize two families into the ward by the end of the year.

One last thing! So we went to visit a Spanish member of the ward...all by ourselves. Let me tell you.. It wasn't that bad! We prayed really hard and we were able to kind of speak with her. There was a Spanish Restoration pamphlet on her coffee table that we read out of to share the thought. As a result we decided that we are going to learn Spanish. (please keep this hush hush.lol  We don't want word getting out that we can speak Spanish or they will have us translate.) So you can now call us 'The Slidell Spanish Sisters' ... unofficially.

So that was our week. Things are going great. Training is going well. I love the people and I love the gospel! ..and I love you family!

love, Sister Urie

Southernism: House 'note' - House 'Bill'.. A Bill that you have to pay they call a Note.
Tracting Tips: We earned 21 cents this week.
Scripture: I love Alma! I am reading in Alma right now and came across a verse that I love, Alma 33:11. I love this verse because it shows us that the Lord does hear our prayers and I love how Alma says 'in thee is my joy' he has joy in the Lord because he hears us and is merciful unto us all because of what Jesus Christ did for us.
You should read Alma 32 and then Alma 33. Hope that makes sense.

I love you all! Be strong and I know that the Lord is looking out for you family.
P.s: love your Halloween costume shadow.
