Dear Family!
How ya'll doing? Things are going great. Yes they are.. we have a few investigators that look promising and if they would only come to church..then they would progress towards baptism so much faster!
We are working with this one lady, who I am sure I told you about ( the elders gave her a blessing a few weeks ago?) well she has yet to come to church with us. She had to go to her church last week because it was the 1st Sunday of the month. Don't know why. We took a member with us to meet her though and teach the plan of salvation with us this week. The lesson went really well and the spirit was present. She asked a lot of good questions. On one of our later visits we just read a chapter with her in the book of Mormon and invited her to read the next one on her own. The mission is starting a stake wide program of members reading with investigators from the book of Mormon. This way they have fellowship and are having someone to help explain things to them. ( two of the three things that Gordon b. Hinckley said that every member needs. a friend, to be nourished by the good word of god and a calling.) We are all very excited for this program to take off and I know that it will help us in the work greatly.
Stories this week...
We ate Pork brains! Went over to a members home and they fed us pork brains out of a can and added it to this rice dish. It tasted a lot like chicken.Funny part was the member told us that when you eat them people say they feel smarter. This is not the case. ( we found out later that it actually was chicken. I was very sad, because I was proud of myself for trying something different!) The member that fed them to us said that she was going to cook us chitlins soon. Don't worry I will keep you posted!
We went and visited the Spanish family that lives in Jackson this week. Saturday we had a set appointment to teach the eight year old daughter of the less active member. ( we will call the eight year old girl Alice) The lesson went well, Alice loves the gospel and the church and eats up everything we tell her. We were both impressed by her reading comprehension. It was very disappointing when Alice's mom would not join us for the lesson, she stayed in the back room because she was to tired to come out. Prior to this lesson we had one scheduled for last week as well. No one was home when we showed up, the week before that we had written down the instructions to the church and the mom told us she would be there with her daughter. Three weeks later they still have not come to church. She told us she lost the instructions on how to get to the church, so we wrote them down again yesterday for her so that she would be able to make it. I know one day they will make it to church. We might have to stop going over there to teach the little girl if the mother will not make some effort.
One cool thing about this story is a week or so ago we say the Spanish members friends son ( say that 10 times fast) and he said that he had a lot of homework. We felt impressed to have him go get his copy of the book of Mormon and told him that if he would read a chapter before doing his homework that he would get his homework done faster then he ever had before. ( kind of weird to promise i know, but we did) When we followed up with him about the promise we gave him he said that his homework went well, but he did not read the whole chapter. Then we told him if he finished reading the chapter he would feel better. ( He has a cold). Reading the book of Mormon cannot get rid of your cold..but with the Lord all things are possible right?
This week was full of contacting people ( "trying potentials") and also trying to contact people from the ward list that no one knows who they are.
We met a great family that was supposed to come to church yesterday and did not. Saturday night we 555'd our dinner appointment and met a wonderful family. The man let us loan him a copy of the book of Mormon and they said that they would come to church the next day. They forgot about the appointment we had with them last night, but that is ok! they have great member fellowship that lives right up the road from them that are going to help us with them. Hopefully I will have more to report on them soon!
That is pretty much it on the week. The work is great and true. I love this gospel and Know that the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored to the earth through the prophet Joseph Smith. It is true! :)
I love ya'll and hope you have a great week!
love, Sister Urie
